Convention Center Carpark is Officially Open to the Public
Springfield, MA ― The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) is pleased to announce that the Convention Center Carpark located adjacent to the MassMutual Center officially opened to the public on Monday, March 31, 2025. The plaza and street scape portions of the project are moving forward at a strong pace, and it is anticipated they will be completed by the end of May.
The new parking facility replaces the Civic Center Garage which was built in 1971 and had deteriorated to the point where only 700 out of its 1,000 parking spaces were able to be utilized. As a result of a collaborative process involving key stakeholders from the City of Springfield, it was determined the best way forward was for the MCCA to purchase, demolish and replace the garage.
The Convention Center Carpark is five-stories, 350,000 square feet and has room for 817 vehicles, including EV infrastructure and charging stations. It is anticipated that the forward-looking development will also activate foot traffic in the area by incorporating retail space on the first level of the garage.
“This project wouldn’t have been possible without the buy-in and support of key local stakeholders,” said Marcel Vernon, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority. “Thank you to Mayor Sarno and the City of Springfield for your partnership on this important economic development project which will provide a world-class parking venue for MassMutual Center patrons, while also activating the neighborhood for the community at large.”
"We deeply appreciate the significant investment the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority is making into Springfield,” said Sean Dolan, General Manager of the MassMutual Center. “The opening of the Convention Center Carpark marks a monumental step forward for both the MassMutual Center and the community. This state-of-the-art facility will enhance the event experience and make it more convenient for our visitors. It’s an exciting time for Springfield, and we’re proud to be part of this positive transformation and remain committed to fostering a dynamic space for everyone who walks through our doors."
A ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration is currently being planned to align with completion of the project and details will be shared with media, stakeholders and the community as soon as they are finalized.
